The bell shaped bowl has been ornamented with a repousse and chased depiction of the chrysanthemum plant and bears a vacant circular cartouche to the front. At the time this was made, chrysanthemums were a very popular design with both the Chinese and European communities. The depiction is extremely lifelike and naturalistic. It features the chrysanthemum flower at various stages of its development from a small bud to a blowsy, full blown flower, together with its leaves and stems. These repousse elements are set against a finely worked background which provides visual and textural contrast.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe bowl is supported by a plain silver stem which increases in girth towards the base. This rises from a tiered inverted bell-shaped foot. The shape of the foot, which suggests a stack of three bells, is believed to reference the traditional architectural shape of a stupa. The top of the ‘bell’ has been ornamented with a simple repeating geometric border resembling a row of large beads. Around the side of the bell there are four small panels of repousse and chased ornament. Each panel contains one plant. These are the plum (梅), the orchid (蘭), the bamboo (竹), and the chrysanthemum (菊). \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn Chinese art the four plants are referred to as the ‘Four Gentlemen’ (四子) or ‘Four Noble Ones’. They are great favourites which have been depicted in Chinese paintings for more than a thousand years, particularly in traditional Chinese ink and wash painting. They traded from premises at 11b Nanking Road. Initially, they were only manufacturers but under the ownership of Mr Fok Ying Chew, they opened a retail store in 1892 selling silver, gold and carved ivory objects together with blackwood furniture and textiles.
