It was made in the Kutch region of India, now Gujerat, around 1900.  Complete with all its original fittings, this impressive object weighs over three and a half kilogrammes and has been beautifully ornamented using repousse and chased techniques in the traditional Kutch style.  It is extremely unusual to find such a large and finely crafted antique silver pandan box still complete and in exceptional original condition.  \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTo the top of the hinged lid is a fold-down scroll shaped silver carrying handle and there is a vacant shield shaped cartouche to the centre of the top.  The lid can be secured to the front of the box by a vase-shaped ornamental latch lock.  The lid is deep and stepped with short sides.  The curved step has been ornamented with a repeating acanthus leaf design and narrow panels featuring a repeating flame pattern run along the sides.  To the top face, surrounding the cartouche, a panel of floral and foliate pattern is contained within acanthus leaf borders.  The panels around the sides of the box are in similar style.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce the lid is lifted, a removable ornamented silver tray with two ring handles is revealed.  This tray was used to prepare the betel quids and to serve or transport the finished quids.  The upward angle of the tray’s rim reduces the risk of potential spillage and wastage of the ingredients.   Such considered and thoughtful features distinguish a great silversmith from his peers and ensure customer loyalty.  Again, the central cartouche is vacant.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen the tray has been removed from the box, the underlying layer can be seen.  This comprises five lidded boxes; one large circular box flanked by two oval-shaped boxes to the back and two smaller circular boxes flanked by two narrow oar-shaped spoons to the front.  The boxes are quite deep in relation to their widths.  The positions of the narrow spoons are secured by small silver pegs and the boxes sit securely within their holes, which have been cut out from a heavy gauge of sheet silver.  The sheet has been elevated above the base of the box and is supported from the underside by small silver brackets attached to the sides of the box.  The lids of the boxes are slightly wider than the actual boxes and the edges rest upon the sheet itself with the containers suspended below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach of the boxes has a circular silver knob to the centre of the covers.  These have been ornamented with scrolling Kutch floral and foliate elements contained within flame and rope borders surrounded by a border of plain silver to the outer edges.  When the box is carried in the upright position all the objects stay in their correct positions, ensuring that the fitments and their contents are safely transported without spillage or damage. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis box is unsigned but the craftsmanship, quality and condition are all excellent and show the influence of Oomersi Mawji’s work; all elements of the design and the practicalities of use have been carefully considered and well planned, contrasting richly ornamented panels with the plain silver surround.  Large pandan boxes were popular and made in a wide range of materials to suit different budgets but large silver examples are rare and it
