The rise and fall of the Mughal Empire changed the political landscape in India and inspired some of the finest antique metalwork. Only a very small portion of Indian silver made during this period and before the 19th century has survived. This can be explained by the fact that labour was cheap in India and consequently it was the custom that when fashions changed or an object was damaged, an item would be melted down and reformed into
